Classical Music Biopic Renaissance Begins as Chopin Film Takes Center Stage
A new wave of classical music biopics is emerging, with two major productions leading the charge: a Polish film about Frédéric Chopin and an Italian feature on Antonio Vivaldi.
Playtime, a Paris-based production company, has acquired "Chopin, A Sonata in Paris," directed by Michał Kwieciński. The film stars Eryk Kulm as Chopin and Lambert Wilson as King Louis Philippe, following the composer's transformative journey to Paris at age 21. The biopic is scheduled for release in Poland this year through Galapagos Films, with international distribution planned through Playtime.

Simultaneously, "Primavera," a Vivaldi biopic directed by opera director Damiano Michieletto, began filming in Rome in October. The film, loosely based on Tiziano Scarpa's novel "Stabat Mater," is a collaboration between Indigo Film Production and Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia, with additional distribution by France's Moana Films.
These productions may signal a shift in biographical filmmaking, potentially sparking a renaissance in classical music biopics. This trend emerges as rock music biopics continue to flourish, with upcoming films featuring Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Janis Joplin. The success of these classical music features in 2025 could pave the way for more explorations of classical composers' lives on screen.
