Microsoft is in renewed talks to potentially acquire TikTok, according to recent statements from President Trump, who expressed interest in seeing a competitive bidding process for the social media platform.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has shown interest in TikTok. In 2020, both Microsoft and Oracle were potential buyers for TikTok's U.S. operations, though neither deal materialized. Currently, TikTok faces a 75-day download ban, with both Apple and Google removing the app from their stores to avoid $5,000 fines per download.

Key points about the potential acquisition:

  • ByteDance (TikTok's parent company) generates only 6-10% of its revenue from TikTok
  • Chinese government approval would be required for any sale
  • Discussions cannot proceed until Scott Bessent's confirmation as Treasury Secretary
  • Multiple parties have expressed interest, including YouTube creator MrBeast
  • Trump emphasizes the importance of excluding Chinese involvement

Trump stated, "We'll see what happens. We're going to have a lot of people bidding on it. If we can save all that voice and all the jobs, and China won't be involved, we don't want China involved, but we'll see what happens."

While Microsoft has not officially commented on the potential acquisition, the situation remains fluid as multiple parties express interest in purchasing the popular social media platform.
