SXSW 2026 Gets Shorter Format, But Expands Music Festival Lineup
SXSW will shorten its overall festival duration starting in 2026, but organizers have confirmed this change won't reduce music programming. In fact, music showcase time will increase by one night.

The changes come as the Austin Convention Center begins a $1.6 billion renovation project, closing from April 1, 2025, until SXSW 2029. This transition period has prompted organizers to reimagine the festival's structure.
Key changes for SXSW 2026:
- Interactive, film & TV, and music programs will run concurrently instead of across separate weekends
- Festival duration reduces to seven days
- Music showcases expand from six to seven nights
- More focused curation of showcasing artists
- Enhanced discovery opportunities across all festival segments
"A shorter SX gives attendees more of a chance to be here for the entire run," explains a SXSW spokesperson. "With the conference, Film & TV festival, and music festival all taking place concurrently over seven days, everyone will have a chance to experience the whole of SXSW."
The new format aims to create a more curated experience while maintaining SXSW's reputation for music discovery. However, questions remain about how musical performances will compete for attention with the increasingly popular Film & TV programming during the consolidated schedule.
