The Wong Janice: From Corporate Career to Meditation Music - How a Silent Retreat Rekindled Her Musical Journey
The Wong Janice discovered her passion for cello at age eight, after initially starting with piano at six. She was drawn to the cello's rich sound, which closely resembles the human voice. Her Chinese background and parents' encouragement led her to join an orchestra, providing a social environment for her musical development.
At thirteen, Janice expanded beyond classical music when a teacher introduced her to playing pop songs on cello. However, a pivotal moment came during an audition with a famous singer, where her inability to improvise cost her a touring opportunity. This experience motivated her to develop improvisation skills through playing with various bands.
After discouraging words from a music teacher about her classical music potential, Janice pursued a different path, earning a master's in marketing and working at Adidas. When feeling stuck in her corporate career, she attended a transformative ten-day Vipassana meditation retreat, which helped her overcome mental barriers and reconnect with music.
Following a job loss, Janice studied at Abbey Road Institute in Amsterdam to become a music producer. Through careful self-reflection and market research, she discovered her true calling: creating meditative cello music. She has since released multiple albums through CD Baby, where she maintains a Plus artist status for efficient music distribution.
Her journey taught her to "let go of always chasing more." Today, Janice creates music that helps listeners find freedom and peace, combining her classical training with meditation-inspired compositions.
